Lot no. 89
KUPKA (František). Four stories of black and white. Paris, s.n., 1926. In-4, leaves, untrimmed, illustrated cover, black and white imitation ostrich skin folder and slipcase (T. Treille). First edition of this collection with 27 original woodcuts by František Kupka, including one on the cover. An important work, the culmination of the artist's aesthetic evolution towards cubism and abstraction. Edition of 300 numbered copies on vellum, this one enriched with an autograph signed letter from the author "To my excellent colleague Marcel Duchamp, sincerely Kupka. Puteaux, July 1946". An illustrated prospectus is enclosed. A precious and exceptional copy addressed by Kupka to one of the major players in the avant-garde of the 20th century. Kupka and Duchamp met in Paris at a New Year's Eve party in 1904. They both took part in the Salon des Indépendants and the Puteaux group. This group, also known as the Section d'or, was formed around 1911 in Puteaux, where Jacques Villon and Frantisek Kupka lived for almost 50 years. Marcel Duchamp visited them as a neighbour from his home in Neuilly.
