Lot no. 115
[LA BARRE DE BEAUMARCHAIS (Antoine). Tafereel, of beschryving van den prachtigen Tempel der Zang-Godinnen. Amsterdam, Zacharias Chatelain, 1733. In-folio, stiff vellum, double framed with cold fillets, fleurons at the corners and medallion in the centre, spine ribbed, spotted edges (Dutch binding of the period). A sumptuous Dutch edition of Beaumarchais' Temple des Muses de Labarre, sought after for its splendid engraved illustration by Bernard Picart, whose mastery of pictorial translation is highly regarded. The iconography consists of a title-frontispiece, a title finial, a large vignette bearing the arms of the Archbishop of Mainz and 60 plates out of text set in rich engraved frames with captions in French, English, German and Dutch. These mythological compositions were inspired by those created by Abraham Diepenbecke for Michel de Marolles' work of the same name, published in 1655. A very fine copy bound in blind-stamped vellum. Light spotting at the head of plate 56; discrete rubbing and stains on the boards. Cohen, 531.
