Lot no. 2476
[LA CAROLINE]. Code Criminel de l'Empereur Charles V, vulgairement appellé La Caroline... Neuveville, J.-J. Marolf, 1742. Small in-4° bound in full spotted tan calf, spine ribbed and gilt (Binding of the period). Decorated with headbands, tailpieces and initials. [1] f., [19] pp. 310 pp.
First published in German in 1533, this document was later translated into French by Franz Adam Vogel, Grand Judge of the King's Guards, and went through four editions between 1734 and 1779. A veritable legislative monument ahead of its time, the Caroline dealt with questions of criminal law and, above all, specified criminal procedure, specifying possible remedies and methods, as well as sentencing according to the nature of the crimes judged.
