Lot no. 18
The counter-revolution dedicated to the Cul-de-Sac des noirs, France, circa 1791-1792.
A very rare satirical counter-revolutionary fan, the double sheet of engraved paper enhanced with gouache is based on an engraving by Villeneuve dating from 1791, taken from the "Emigration" series and mocking the royalists who had left France.
The composition brings together a number of personalities from the French Revolution, including aristocrats, soldiers, clerics and commoners, separated by the Rhine. On the left, a rock described as the "English Constitution" is dominated by the flag of Liberty. Each figure is accompanied by a number that refers to captions on the side. These include "Son Altesse révolutionnaire le Petit Condé", the Prince of Condé, Louis-Joseph de Bourbon (1736-1818); "General d'Autichamp" (1738-1831), "Antoine Séguier carrying the Réquisitoire contre la Nation", "Calonne carrying the treasure chest of the Army" Charles-Alexandre de Calonne (1734-1802), but also the "Pucelle de la Contre-Révolution", the Duchess of Polignac (1749-1793), close friend of Queen Marie-Antoinette, or "Mirabeau tonneau armé en guerrier", André-Boniface Riqueti de Mirabeau (1754-1792).
The reverse is illustrated with six couplets entitled "Le Triomphe de l'abbé Maury" to the tune of Calpigi.
