Lot no. 89
Discord in the enemy. Gr. in-8 (26.4 x 16.7 cm), paperback, printed cover. Very rare first edition of the first book by Charles de Gaulle, then a captain. It was not printed on large paper. Charles de Gaulle, taken prisoner during the First World War, used his captivity (when he was not trying to escape) to learn about German political and military life. He gave lectures on this subject to his fellow prisoners. He continued to lecture and train throughout his military career. During his internment in the fortress of Ingolstadt, he met Étienne Répessé, a member of the Arras infantry regiment, who was to become his publisher at Berger-Levrault. The book contains five lectures: "General von Kluck's Disobedience", "The Declaration of Reinforced Submarine War", "Relations with the Allies", "The Fall of Chancellor Bethmann-Hollweg" and "The Rout of the German People". Damage to spine of front cover, slight tears to endpapers.
