La Faye, Jean-Baptiste de Voyage pour la rédemption des Captifs aux Royaumes d'Alger et de Tunis, fait en 1720 par François Comelin, Philémon La Motte et Joseph Bernard. Paris, L.-A. Sevestre, Giffart, 1721. The "Voyage" is followed by two texts: "Liste des esclaves rachetés à Alger, Tunis" and "Tradition de l'Église sur la rédemption des captifs" 2 works in one volume in-12 of (8) ff., 169 pp, - LX pp., 306 pp., (3) ff. brown basane, spine ribbed, red title page, interior gilt roulette, marbled edges, gilt edges, (period binding). First edition. The illustration consists of two (out of three) engraved hors texte figures, including a folded double-page plate depicting the Audience du Deï d'Alger (the engraved portrait of the young Louis XV by Giffart is missing here, an absence sometimes reported in other volumes). Wear to binding, one tear to spine, hinges and headpieces restored, good condition inside. Quérard, IV, 390 and Barbier, IV, 1095 attribute this work to J. - B. de La Faye, which relates the voyage of Fathers François Comelin, Philémon de La Motte and Joseph Bernard. An important account of the traffic in Europeans captured at sea by Barbary corsairs and reduced to slavery. Their redemption was often negotiated by clerics. A list of more than 400 slaves is given.
