LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Fables nouvelles et autres poësies. Paris, Denys Thierry, 1671. In-12, jansenist red morocco, interior lace, gilt edges (M. Lortic). Partly first edition containing eight original fables: Le lion, le loup et le renard, Le coche et la mouche, Le trésor et les deux hommes, Le rat et l'huître, Le singe et le chat, Du glan et de la citroüille, Le milan et le rossignol and L'huître et les plaideurs; also unpublished fragments of Le Songe de Vaux, the second edition of Adonis and other occasional poetry.
According to Tchemerzine, this collection is "the most varied and one of the most curious by La Fontaine, who reveals in it the diverse aspects of the court poet, the fabulist, the friend of Fouquet in disgrace, and the great artist of Adonis". It was dedicated to the Duc de Guise.
The fables are adorned with eight etched vignettes by François Chauveau.
The current title on pp. 32-33 is faulty.
