In 1784, La Jaille was commissioned to survey the west coast of Africa from Cap Blanc to the Sierra Leone River. His Memoirs describe Senegal and the state of our settlements in this region before the Revolution, while Labarthe's notes (83 pp.) update the situation in 1802 and show the imbalance introduced by the abolition of slavery and the black slave trade in the French possessions when the English still exercised it throughout the rest of the territory.
