LA MÉSANGÈRE (Pierre de) and LANTÉ (Louis-Marie). Costumes des femmes de Hambourg, du Tyrol, de la Hollande, de la Suisse, de la Franconie, de l'Espagne, du royaume de Naples, etc. Paris, publisher, 1827. In-folio of [2] f., 41 p. and 100 plates, old signed binding in red morocco, very ornate ribbed spine, boards cold-stamped with a romantic decoration and framed with a quadruple gilt fillet, guilloche-trimmed edges and headpieces, inner lace, all edges gilt (R. P. Ginain).
First edition of this rare suite of 100 beautiful costume plates, drawn by Lanté and some by Horace Vernet, copper-engraved by Gatine and hand-coloured.
It focuses mainly on traditional German and Swiss costumes, but also to a lesser extent on Spanish, Italian and French costumes. In a preliminary note the author confides: "In almost all of Europe women of the first class, and even those of the second, take it upon themselves to follow the fashions of Paris: it has therefore been necessary, in order to form a Gallery of Characteristic Costumes, to have the costumes of workers, and even of servants, drawn.
Some minor foxing. Slight rubbing to the binding. A fine copy in a superb signed antique binding.
