Lot no. 106
LA MOTTRAYE (Aubry de). Travels in Europe, Asia and Africa. The Hague, T. Johnson & J. van Duren, 1727. 2 volumes in-folio, speckled calf, spine decorated, mottled edges (period binding). French first edition of this very fine voyage, particularly interesting for Turkey and Scandinavia. The Travels of La Mottraye (1674-1743), a Huguenot who took refuge in London, recount twenty-six years of peregrinations across Europe, including Italy, Greece, Sweden and Denmark, Lapland, the Crimea, Circassia, Tartary and the Ottoman Empire. The author published the original edition in English in London in 1723. The work is particularly sought-after for its illustrations, partly by the painter and engraver William Hogarth, one of the most famous English artists of the 18th century, and part of his early work. The iconography consists of a title-frontispiece by Bernard Picart, repeated in the second volume, and 51 fold-out or double-page plates, including 4 fold-out maps, all engraved in intaglio by W. Hogarth, R. Smith, G. Vertue and others. Some plates of Levantine costumes seem to have been inspired by the famous collection published by Le Hay in 1714. A well-bound copy of the period. Covers and corners a little worn, snag on the second cover of the first volume, small marginal repair to some plates, tears, some foxing not serious. Boucher de la Richarderie, I, 216 - Chadenat, n°105 - Blackmer, n°946 - Atabey, n°661 - Weber, II, 443.
