Smith. First French edition of the account, originally published in 1723 in English, of the important voyage of Aubry de La Mottraye, a French Huguenot close to Charles XII, King of Sweden. These two volumes compile nearly 26 years of travels across Europe, Asia and Africa and feature a rich iconography of objects, costumes, scenes and views of landscapes, coins, city maps and military plans. Fairly good condition, lacking an engraved title and a plate, binding tired, ff. a little browned, some foxing. Label of the bookseller Maire located in Lyon Provenance: Collection of Princess Marie-Clotilde Bonaparte, Countess de Witt, which has remained in the family to this day.
