Lot no. 109
THE CHICKEN IN THE POT - Domed enamelled plaque circa 1935. Very good colours, good brilliance, some enamel leaks in the margins. 41 x 29 cm approx. The chicken in the pot, a product of the bouillon KUB company. The "Kub bouillon" patent for its cube-shaped presentation was registered in France on 14 November 1907 by Julius MAGGI. Industrially produced bouillon cubes were marketed by Maggi in 1908, by Oxo in 1910 and by Knorr in 1912. By 1913, around ten brands were available. The "KUB bouillon" signs had been placed on house corners at crossroads from Germany. Believing them to be a German brand, rumour had it that they had been used as signposts to direct Germans (cabalistic numbers can be found on these plates, originally they were simply manufacturing reference numbers...) towards Paris during the First World War, to the extent that "Maggi" and "Kub" enamels were unscrewed in towns everywhere. The same rumour had it that Maggi milk was poisoned (Sources: wikipédia, radiofrance.fr, and livre émail & pub).
