LABORDE (Léon de) and LINANT. Voyage de l'Arabie Pétrée. Paris, Giard, 1830. Broadside, half calf, spine decorated with gilt and cold motifs, smooth edges (contemporary binding). First edition of one of the most beautiful works ever published on Jordan, published by Léon de Laborde (1807-1869) on his return from his archaeological exploration of the Sinai Peninsula, from Cairo to Aqaba via Petra, undertaken in March 1828 with the engineer L.-M.-A. Linant de Bellefonds (1799-1883). The work is dedicated to Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse-Cassel.
Magnificent illustration comprising 69 lithographed plates (except one engraved on copper) after drawings by Laborde and several others, including a folding map, three double-page plates and a figure of a desert rodent in colour. The title is adorned with a large lithographed vignette by Victor Adam and the text includes numerous woodcut vignettes, drawn and sometimes engraved by Laborde.
A fine copy, elegantly bound in the period.
Upper hinge cracked; some foxing, generally sparing the lithographs.
