MURIK LAKES, Papua New Guinea. Hardwood, natural pigments. A hut mask embodying a mythical being or spirit. It depicts an oval-shaped face bordered by a serrated cord, with a proboscis-like nose ending in a beak. The forehead, engraved with spiral motifs, is carved in relief with a stylised animal. Height: 38.5 cm. Width: 14.5 cm. Slight wear. Provenance : -Collection of the painter Alain Plouvier, Paris and Chedigny (37). -Peter Hallinan Collection (according to collection metal label no P 63910).
