Lot no. 76
LAINEZ (Alexandre). Poësies. La Haye [Paris], la Compagnie [Thiboust], 1753. In-8, marbled calf, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated, red edges (Binding of the period). Rare first edition. This poetic collection, published by Aquin de Château-Lyon and Titon Du Tillet more than forty years after the author's death, contains numerous drinking poems (including Les Pressoirs de Champagne, Éloge du vin de Champagne, Prière à Bacchus pour obtenir une bonne vendange, L'Origine du tire-bouchon, etc.), among other pieces with evocative titles (La Salade épicurienne, La Marmelade, La Turogénésie ou l'origine du fromage, La Cafetière renversée, etc.). Copies with the arms of the Marquis de Paulmy. Antoine-René de Voyer de Paulmy d'Argenson (1722-1787) held many public offices, including ambassador to Switzerland, Poland and Venice. He was a man of letters, a member of the Académie Française in 1748 and a great bibliophile. In 1785 he sold his immense collection to the Count of Artois, which forms the main part of the Arsenal library. A small handwritten note, possibly in his hand, is attached to one of the endpapers. Binding skilfully restored. Simon, Gastronomica, n°937 - Oberlé, Fastes, n°529 - OHR 1722/1.
