By creating the Greek Jewellers Association in the 1950s, Lalaounis launched a revival that combined the old with the new. He provided the decisive impetus in 1957 when he exhibited his so-called archaeological collection, which incorporated all the codes of the different periods of ancient Greece, from the Minoan to the Hellenistic periods. Modern Greek jewellery took hold, initially made entirely of gold, hammered, stretched and worked without any additions, in complete contrast to Western Europe, where diamonds and coloured stones were very much in evidence. Then the adaptation became gradual, with the addition of diamonds, intaglios and cameos, but yellow gold remained the essential element and was ultra-present in the creations. The bracelet we are presenting belongs to this movement, interweaving openworked links in a more rigid, but not heavy, structure that fits perfectly around the wrist.
