Provenance: London private collection, then by descent until 2024
This fragment belongs to the production of Ottoman votive textiles for the Rawda al-Mutahhara in Medina, woven in green silk and decorated with inscriptions in thuluth forming a network of chevrons. The green colour, associated with the Prophet, and the repetition of the Shahada gave these fabrics a strong devotional value. After being replaced periodically, these fabrics were piously redistributed, perpetuating a custom attested to as far back as the first centuries of Islam. See the very fine example sold at Artcurial on 21 May 2025, lot 90.
