LAMPEDUSA (Giuseppe Tomasi di). Il Gattopardo. Milan, Feltrinelli, 1958. In-8, publisher's bradel yellow boards illustrated in red, illustrated slipcase (Julie Nadot). First edition, published in 2000 copies on 25 October 1958. No large paper copies were printed.
"Le Guépard is a little more than a beautiful book, it is one of the great novels of this century, one of the great novels of all time, and perhaps [...], the only Italian novel", wrote Aragon in a famous article at the heart of the Le Guépard controversy (Les Lettres françaises, 17 December 1959). The novel was awarded the Strega prize posthumously in 1959. Luchino Visconti's film adaptation won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963.
An as-published copy, preserved in its publisher's illustrated hardback.
It is preserved in an attractive box by Julie Nadot illustrated with a view of the Castello di Donnafugata in Sicily.
