LARGE CYPRIOT POTTERY AMPHORA - EX CHRISTIE'S.
Ca. 1050 - 750 BC
A thick-walled, heavy pottery vessel with an acorn-shaped body standing on a tapered, flat foot. Two thick and sturdy handles emerge from the widest point of the body and loop upwards. The curved shoulder gives way to a nearly straight, slightly hourglass-shaped cylindrical neck. The thick rim is painted with a broad meander line, bands of linear and concentric circles on the neck and body with bands of differing widths, all in deep brown on the tan coloured natural ground.
