LARGE ROMAN RED GARNET INTAGLIO DEPICTING CUPID AND GRYLLOS IN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING Ca. AD 100 - 300. A large red garnet intaglio engraved with a complex scene of a nude winged Cupid raising a club over his shoulder as he confronts a hybrid figure of Gryllos, with a human head, horse and ram foreparts, and a dolphin swimming below. A retrograde inscription in Greek letters is engraved beneath the scene. The gem is set within a broad oval bezel on a gold ring with tapering shoulders, possibly of a later date. For similar see: D.
