Large wrought iron brazier. Catalonia. Romanesque. 13th century. Rectangular brazier, formed by four decorated plates and four uprights with wheels at the bottom and curved tops on which the rings which were used to transport it were hung. The elaborate wrought iron decoration is outstanding, made up of pairs of opposing spirals joined with a vertical shaft which ends in a spear shape. This motif continues all around the edge of the brazier. This typology has Romanesque or even earlier roots, and continued until the 15th and 16th centuries. There are few known examples like this one. One of them forms part of The Cloisters collection at the MET in New York, dated in the 13th century, but in a worse state of preservation and smaller in size than this example, having the collection number 47.101.78. A second example is kept at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, dated in the 12th century, with inventory number 57819. A third can be found in the Vic Episcopal Museum collection in Spain, numbered MEV4465. 37 x 65 x 56 cm.
