LATE ROMAN GYPSUM MOULD CAST FOR OIL LAMPS. Ca. AD 400 - 500. An upper section of a gypsum mould cast for oil lamps. The recessed cavity follows the form of a Hayes Type IIA lamp, with a central discus featuring a relief of a palm tree with a slender trunk and symmetrically arranged fronds. The surrounding field is decorated with an alternating arrangement of floral and circular motifs.
