LATE ROMAN HIGH KARAT GOLD RING WITH NICOLO INTAGLIO
Ca. AD 300.
A gold ring set with an oval-shaped, convex nicolo intaglio consisting of a layered blue and black stone. The bezel is wide and slightly raised, holding the intaglio within a shallow collar. On either side of the bezel are stylised fan-shaped shoulder elements with incised radiating grooves, bordered by flat vertical bars. The hoop is constructed with a series of shallow notches forming a scalloped contour.
