Edme-François Jomard, coordinator of the Description de l'Égypte. Edme-François Jomard (1777-1862), an engineer and geographer who had studied at the Ponts and Polytechnique engineering schools, took part in the Egyptian Expedition (1798-1801) and was a member and then, from 1807, general secretary of the Egyptian Commission responsible for publishing the Description de l'Égypte. It was he who, through his energy and tenacity, directed the publication of this monument of scientific erudition, the founder of modern Egyptology, from 1810 to 1829 (issues dated 1809-1822).
