Lot no. 119
LAVALLÉE (Joseph) and J.-B.-J. BRETON. Voyage dans les départemens de la France, par une société d'artistes et gens de lettres. Paris, Brion et al, 1792-1802. 13 volumes in-8, seeded calf, gilt oak-leaf border, smooth spine decorated, speckled edges (Binding of the period). An exceptional collection of this methodical description of France, department by department, undertaken two years after their creation by the Constituent Assembly. The text was written by Joseph Lavallée and Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Breton, while Louis Brion de la Tour was responsible for the illustrations and his father for the maps. Lavishly illustrated with a title-frontispiece, 323 (out of 330?) out-of-text plates of views and costumes engraved in aquatint after Louis Brion fils and 101 double-page maps enhanced in watercolour by Louis Brion père. A very rare copy in attractive uniform contemporary bindings. The first issue is in the second edition, reprinted in the same year 1792; the publisher's prospectus has been enclosed. 7 views described by Monglond are missing: Ruins of the aqueduct, Costumes of mountain dwellers and Cheniménil in volume II, Place de la Liberté in Nantes in volume VI, Mende in volume X, Ajaccio and Ferney in volume XI. Slight lacks on the covers of two volumes (volumes IX and XIII), minor damage to the bindings. Monglond, II, 465-474 - Quérard, IV, 632.
