Important compilation of the capitula ; the principal collections of laws, statutes, and legal provisions of the Kingdom of Sicily ; beginning with the reign of James I of Aragon (1267-1327). The editor, Francesco Testa, Archbishop of Syracuse and later Monreale, is remembered not only for this monumental compendium of Sicilian law, but also for his work as a poet and historian, and for founding a school in Monreale dedicated to classical and philosophical studies.
2 vols, folio (336 x 235mm). Engraved vignettes to titles, engraved portraits and headpieces in the text; a wide-margined copy (waterstaining to first few leaves of vol. I, small wormholes to the opening and final leaves of both volumes; otherwise internally clean and fresh). Bound in contemporary vellum, titles gilt to spines, marbled edges (defects to endpapers).
