ORIGINAL FRENCH EDITIONS OF THE DUTCH PAINTER'S TWO TRAVELS, lavishly and remarkably illustrated from his drawings - and published at his own expense. Few voyages of this period provide such exhaustive descriptions of the places visited. The first (1674-1693) includes a portrait, a frontispiece, a map and 384 figures or views on 98 plates, many of which are fold-outs, including the very large views of Constantinople, Alexandria, Bethlehem... and 22 large vignettes in the text; the second (1701-1708) takes the traveller through North Russia to Persia, Isfahan and Persepolis, and ends in Ceylon, Java and Bantam. It includes 3 maps, 1 frontispiece, 1 portrait, 269 figures or out-of-text views, often folding, on 121 plates and 54 large vignettes in the text, with 2 very large folding views of Moscow and Isfahan. The artist's choice of depicting natives, animals or fruit in very close-up is particularly impressive, as is the figure, in strong perspective, showing the interior of a gallery in the pyramid of Cheops, in the dim light of torches. This is the first publication of the interior of this monument. A VERY FINE COPY IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING. The spine irons show some differences, the two voyages having been published more than fifteen years apart. The pp. 279/280 of the 1st voyage are in 2 states (with and without the engraving).
