Lot no. 249
THE FUTURE MARSHAL IN THE WAGRAM CAMPAIGN PONIATOWSKI (Józef Antoni). Letter signed "Joseph prince Poniatowski" as general-in-chief of the army of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, addressed to a count. Krakow, 19 July 1809. One p. in-4. Very rare " ... If the satisfaction that His Majesty the Emperor has deigned to show the Polish army gives us the certainty of having fulfilled our duty, the idea of having earned the esteem of the French warriors can only add to the feeling it gives us. As we like to remember that it is to their efforts that we owe our existence, it is sweet for us to discharge at least part of our debt by sharing in the defence of the interests of the common cause. Please be persuaded, Count, that the flattery you have shown me is another reason for me to hope that favourable circumstances will allow me to show you how much I appreciate it. It will then be a pleasure for me to cultivate your friendship, which I am anxious to renew to you the expression of my high regard...". Prince Poniatowski, commander-in-chief of the Polish, Saxon and French troops in the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, provided invaluable assistance to the Grand Army engaged against Austria, by fixing Archduke Ferdinand's troops in Galicia, which, after gaining the upper hand for a time, were largely defeated. Attached is a copper-engraved portrait of Marshal Poniatowski.
