LE PAULMIER DE GRENTEMESNIL (Jacques). Græciæ antiquæ descriptio. Leiden, Daniel van Garsbeeck, 1678. Small in-4, speckled calf, triple gilt fillet, crowned numeral in the corners and coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with semé of the same crowned numeral, red edges (Binding of the period). First edition.
This erudite description of ancient Greece by Le Paulmier de Grentemesnil (1587-1670), "a Norman humanist, swordsman and Hellenist" (R. Baladié), was published after his death by Étienne Morin, one of his nephews, who enriched it with a biography of the author and dedicated it to the Duc de Montausier.
A dedication copy bearing the arms and cipher of Charles de Sainte-Maure, Duke of Montausier (1610-1690), Governor of Normandy. At the time widower of the "incomparable" Julie d'Angennes (1607-1671), Charles de Sainte-Maure had also been entrusted by the King with the education of the Grand Dauphin, for whom he published the fine collection of classical authors ad usum Delphini.
Hinges rebound, some freckling and leaves uniformly foxed.
