The Civic Oath, France, circa 1790.
Folded fan, revolutionary, the double sheet of paper engraved and enhanced with gouache, Bailly, first mayor of the City of Paris, and General La Fayette, taking the oath above an altar. The Guard stands around them, while a love bird hovers over them, protecting the "civic oath" and holding a "Vive la Nation La Fayette et Bailly" phylactery.
On the sides, four verses on the Air des Dettes celebrating the civic oath.
