The Temple of Isis at Pompeii, Italy, circa 1820.
A rare folded fan, a souvenir of the Grand Tour, the double skin sheet, painted in gouache, of a rare view of Roman ruins, the Temple of Isis at Pompeii, with visitors in the foreground. The depiction of the temple is well known from an engraving by F. Piranesi dating from 1788.
The reverse shows doves on either side of a pink tie, with the legend "En s'éloignant, il se resserre" ("As it moves away, it tightens").
Two rebuses on the sides, including a bouquet of thoughts meaning "Think of me", and a second unidentified rebus combining a leaf (of hornbeam?) and the legend "Je ne change qu'en mourant".
Mounted in tortoiseshell, the strands and plumes inlaid with 9k (375 thousandths) gold sequins.
