Our gouache illustrates Chapter II of Book III of the Chronique de Charles VI, a historiographical work written by a contemporary, a monk at Saint-Denis Abbey, recounting the history of France during the turbulent reign of King Charles VI (1368-1422). This episode recounts the strange events that took place in Paris just before the maillotins revolt provoked on 1 March 1382 by the tax reform. The birth of a two-headed calf was interpreted as an omen of the terrible events that followed.
