Lot no. 32
Léon Hingre, Concert au salon, France, circa 1890.
A rare folded fan, made to order, the leaf in very fine needle lace, gauze stitch, decorated with scrolls and foliage, pomegranates, fantastic birds and four griffin heads. In the centre, a cartel is painted in gouache, on skin-lined paper, of a musical entertainment in an interior, in the taste of the Middle Ages. A coat of arms, probably that of the commissioner, is depicted on an armchair and a cupboard.
Signed lower left "L. Hingre" for the painter and illustrator Léon Hingre.
An exceptional full blond tortoiseshell fan mount, carved, engraved and slightly enhanced with gold, in the style of the French sculptor Louis-Honoré Henneguy (see "Dessin pour une monture d'éventail", Revue des arts décoratifs, Paris, 1888, p. 327).
In the centre, two volutes frame a cartel with three lovers, one of whom is about to shoot an arrow. In harmony with the leaf, indicating a commission fan, griffin heads and pomegranates complete the ornamentation.
The plumes and counter-plumes are richly sculpted with nymphs in volutes of foliage. In a novel way, their blond tortoiseshell wings unfold on the right and left of two folds of the leaf.
Bélière.
(Very good condition, one stain).
Height 35 cm; leaf height: 21.5 cm.
In a box bearing the number "N.L" on the lid.
N.B.: Léon Hingre first exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1879. He is known as a painter and poster artist.
