Commentary:
Our painting refers to Empress Eugénie's visit to the cholera patients at the Hôtel-Dieu in Amiens on 4th July 1866, where she brought comfort to the patients. This episode is also immortalised in a painting by Auguste Feragu in the Château de Compiègne museum.
