"Drawing brings us closer to Foujita than to Michelangelo, Rembrandt or Goya. Raphael, Holbein, Ingres and Leonardo da Vinci teach us the eloquent sufficiency of form reduced to the beauty of pure line. Hokusaï gives us lessons in humanity and makes us dream. All Japanese painters are first and foremost draughtsmen. Foujita favors drawing above all else. [On paper, apart from the pencil line, shadows applied with estompe are rare and discreet, but sufficient to accentuate volume.
