[LEONARDO] BOSSI, Giuseppe (1777-1815). Del Cenacolo di Leonardo da Vinci. Milan: Stamperia Reale, 1810.
Wide-margined copy of this celebrated first illustrated edition on Leonardo's Last Supper. A key work in art historiography, this volume analyses the famous Milanese fresco with exceptional thoroughness. A multifaceted artist and refined collector, Giuseppe Bossi (1777-1815) produced a copy of the Last Supper for Eugène de Beauharnais before compiling this monumental study, documenting every aspect of the painting and recording its restorations. The book became a staple among European travellers and contributed to making the Last Supper a key stop on the Grand Tour. Both Stendhal and Goethe owned a copy.
Folio (446 x 305mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait of Leonardo, 6 intaglio plates (some in sanguine), wide margins, untrimmed (small stain at foot of first two leaves, occasional spotting). Bound in early 20th-century half red morocco, spine lettered directly in gilt. (1)
