Lot no. 601
Leonetto CAPPIELLO (1875-1942)
Revel umbrella, the three figures facing each other, smiling, circa 1925
Gouache, watercolour, ink, charcoal and graphite, signed lower right
H. 57.5 cm - W. 40.5 cm (as seen) DV
This hitherto unpublished composition was commissioned by François Revel from Leonetto Cappiello, following the success of the initial poster. The industrialist, who had developed a close friendship with the poster artist, suggested that he reveal the faces of the three silhouettes in the original design.
Inspired by the graphic and facetious nature of this work, it anticipates the world of Stanley Donan and Gene Kelly's 1952 film, Singing in the Rain.
Small tear (approx. 3 cm) in the top left background, consolidated with adhesive tape from the back
Provenance: Descendants of the Revel family
