Lot no. 146
LEOPARDI, Giacomo (1798-1837). Canti. Florence: Piatti, 1836. Rare second Florentine edition of the Canzoni, printed by Guglielmo Piatti, the same printer of the first edition of 1831. This edition includes, with corrections, the additions previously published in the 1835 Neapolitan edition by Saverio Starita, which featured the so-called 'Aspasia cycle. It is well known that Leopardi was deeply disappointed with the Starita edition, plagued by countless errors only partially addressed by the Errata corrige. In a letter to De Sinner (3 October 1835), the poet referred to the publisher as a 'lousy bookseller,' accusing him of capitalising on the work's success to produce 'the vilest edition possible, in paper, type, and everything else. Although not authorised by the author, the present edition is decidedly more accurate than the Neapolitan one. 12mo, (145 × 100 mm). Uncut (half-title present but trimmed). Later printed wrappers.
