LÉOPOLD GAUTRAIT - ART NOUVEAU PERIOD MAGNIFICENT "PEACOCK" NECKLACE IN PLIQUE-À-JOUR ENAMEL EGYPTOMANIA The pendant with its "whiplash" lines stylises two peacocks facing each other, the green and violet plique-à-jour enamel background decorated with palmettes and wavelets enhanced by lines of small rose-cut diamonds. In the centre is a rectangular cut-edge peridot set with a rose-cut piriform diamond. Set in 18K yellow gold with a fine pearl pendant. Signed L. GAUTRAIT. French work circa 1900. The choker (later) is made up of five rows of small pearls, probably fine pearls (not tested) held by 18K yellow gold bars. Modern clasp in 18K yellow gold. LUCKY PEACOCKS As early as 1901, at the Salon des Artistes Français, Léopold Gautrait caused a sensation by selling a peacock brooch to the Victoria & Albert Museum, according to the Museum's archives. For the Atelier Gariod, he created peacocks, swallows and female heads until 1905, when he turned to a more marked Louis XVI style, which is frequently found on the market.
