Provenance: Galerie Danysz, Shanghai Acquired directly from the latter by the current owner Exhibitions: Shanghai, Galerie Danysz, Huang Rui, Jiang Ji'An, Li Hongbo, Meaning Matter, 13 December 2014 to 10 January 2015 FR Li Hongbo is best known for his works inspired by the 'honeycomb' lantern technique, traditionally found at Chinese festivities and dating back to the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). After examining them at length, the artist discovered that these lanterns had some interesting properties. In addition to their flexibility, they are very robust and can be easily folded back into their original shape. In developing this technique, Li perfected a process that involves stacking and gluing thousands of sheets of paper, which he then carves in the same way as a block of marble, first using a circular saw, then a small grinder, and finally sandpaper. On average, Li Hongbo's sculptures are made from more than 20,000 sheets of paper, but the number can be much greater for large pieces.
