Lot no. 115
LIEBIG - Curved enamelled plate circa 1900. Embossed lettering. Chips around the edges, upper right corner heavily altered by rust. Approx. 47.5 x 32.8 cm This plaque was part of a set of two plaques (back to back) suspended from an ox-shaped cast iron bracket (this is one of the two plaques). Justus von Liebig was a German chemist who devoted his life to agronomic research. In 1865, the German engineer Giebert joined forces with Baron Justus von Liebig to set up Liebig's Extract of Meat Company in London. Their vision was to market the meat extract invented by the Baron a few years earlier, to develop meat concentrates as food supplements - a process studied as early as 1847, then perfected in 1860 - animal meal and finally milk preparations for infants (source: universalis.fr and Wikipedia).
