Lot no. 85
LISTER (Martin). Voyage à Paris en 1698, translated for the first time, published and annotated by the Société des Bibliophiles françois. Paris, Société des Bibliophiles François, 1873. Large in-8, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, gilt fleurons in centre and spandrels, ornate spine, inner lace, gilt edges (R. Petit). First edition in French, translated from English by Ernest de Sermizelles, with notes and commentary by Baron Pichon, Paulin Paris and Clément de Ris, and supplemented with extracts from John Evelyn's travels in France between 1648 and 1661. An engraved plate depicts the exhibition of paintings in the Louvre in 1699. Martin Lister, a famous London physician, accompanied the Earl of Portland on his embassy to France for the Peace of Riswick negotiations. He spent six months in the capital and published an account of his stay in Paris during the reign of Louis XIV in 1698. As for the gastronomic interest of this account, please refer to Gérard Oberlé's lengthy note in Les Fastes de Bacchus et de Comus. Lister also evokes French wines, celebrating those of Beaune, Volnay, Meursault, Chablis, Condrieu, Champagne, Arbois, Touraine, Anjou, etc. Unique edition on fine strong laid paper. A very fine copy of the Marquis Charles de Biencourt (1826-1914), a member of the Bibliophiles françois from 1867. One spine slightly chipped. Oberlé, n°92.
