Stamp Volksschule Zu Kreis St Goarshausen. The U 177 markings may correspond to the Unterseeboot 177, commissioned on 15 November 1942. Assigned to combat formation 10. Unterseebootsflottille at Lorient before joining the 12. Unterseebootsflottille in Bordeaux. Its third patrol left the La Rochelle submarine base on 2 January 1944 under the command of korvettenkapitän Heinz Buchholz. After 36 days at sea, U-177 was sunk on 6 February 1944 in the South Atlantic Ocean, west of Ascension Island, by depth charges launched from an American Consolidated B-24 Liberator of VB-107/B-3 squadron, while it was in the company of U-66 to refuel. 50 of the 65 crew members died in the attack. Stamped Volksschule Zu Kreis St. Goarshausen "The U177 marking may correspond to the submarine U-177, commissioned on 15 November 1942, assigned first to the 10th U-boat Flotilla at Lorient, then to the 12th Flotilla at Bordeaux from 1 December 1942. Its third patrol departed from the La Rochelle submarine base on 2 January 1944 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Heinz Buchholz. After 36 days at sea, U-177 was sunk on 6 February 1944 in the South Atlantic, west of Ascension Island, by depth charges from a U.S. Consolidated B-24 Liberator of Squadron VB-107/B-3, while refuelling alongside U-66. Fifty of the sixty-five crew members were killed in the attack. U-66 managed to escape. Some wear and patina on the piece. Condition II+.
