Its third patrol left the La Rochelle submarine base on 2 January 1944 under the command of korvettenkapitän Heinz Buchholz. After 36 days at sea, U-177 was sunk on 6 February 1944 in the South Atlantic Ocean, west of Ascension Island, by depth charges launched from an American Consolidated B-24 Liberator of VB-107/B-3 squadron, while it was in the company of U-66 to refuel. 50 of the 65 crew members died in the attack.
