Paris, Léon Curmer, 1861. 2 volumes in-4 mounted on tabs, the first bound in garnet-red morocco, richly decorated with roulettes and cold-seeded on the boards framed with gilt fillets and decorated with the arms of France and Brittany and gilt porcupines, spine decorated in the same way, wide inner border, lining and blue silk endpapers strewn with gilt ermines, gilt edges, in slipcase; the second in garnet-red half-maroquin with corners, spine decorated in the same way, gilt head (Thierry). Magnificent chromolithographic reproduction of the Grandes Heures d'Anne de Bretagne, one of the most beautiful and famous French painted manuscripts, commissioned by the queen from the illuminator Jean Bourdichon in the early years of the 16th century (BnF, Ms. lat. 9474). The work was lavishly edited by Léon Curmer and 850 copies were published by subscription. The first volume contains the complete reproduction, chromolithographed by R.-J. Lemercier, of the original manuscript, forming 477 pp. decorated with 49 full-page paintings and 337 marginal miniatures in colour and gilding. The second volume contains the French translation of the Book of Hours by Abbé Delaunay, accompanied by previously unpublished notes and a catalogue of the plants depicted in the illuminations. It also contains a list of the 850 subscribers to the work. A luxuriously bound copy bearing the arms and emblems of Anne de Bretagne. It is not numbered, but bears the signature P. Derouet at the justification. It is enhanced by a suite of twelve original full-page paintings signed by C. Schultz, inspired by the illuminations adorning the Calendar of Hours. The title Souvenirs et Pensées is calligraphed on the first of these. Some plates in the first volume are in double proof and the text volume is accompanied by some sixty black and white reproductions of original paintings by Jean Bourdichon. Hinges rubbed, some leaves foxed or greyed, minor scattered foxing.
