Miniature painter to Louis XVIII, Charles X and Louis-Philippe, Madame de Mirbel studied painting with Jean-Baptiste Augustin. She was appointed miniature painter to the King's Chamber after exhibiting a portrait of Louis XVIII at the Salon in 1818, and in 1824 she married the botanist Charles-François Brisseau de Mirbel (1776-1854). Here she portrays the Duc d'Orléans, heir to the July Monarchy, a portrait that she painted in various versions (Musée Condé, Chantilly; Musée Calvet, Avignon, dated 1837; Christie's London sale, 17 October 1995, no. 107, signed and dated 1837; Guizot collection, dated 1845, not located; Sotheby's sale in Paris 29 September 2015 no. 57, signed and dated 1837 and Pohl-Ströhler collection, Sotheby's sale in London, 4 July 2019, no. 174, signed and dated 1842). Our miniature was acquired by the royal furniture guard for the d'Orléans family, as attested by the
Journal des Commandes et acquisitions du Garde Meuble Royal then reappeared on the art market in 1912 at the fourth Jean Dollfus sale.
