In-4 (29,5 × 20,6 cm), wine calf, on the boards a large incised frame, painted and enhanced with silver representing snakes coiling, ribbed spine, gilt edges, interior framed with 5 gilt and silver fillets, grey silk lining and endpapers, covers and spine preserved, slipcase (Legrand). Edition decorated with a frontispiece and 40 copper-engraved etching and drypoint figures by Alméry Lobel-Riche, including 23 hors texte. Limited edition of 300 numbered copies, one of 150 on vellum paper with the finished state of all the plates (no. 194). The copy is enriched with an original drawing (for the illustration on page 60), mounted at the head of the volume, and a suite of figures with remarks, printed in two tones, bound throughout the work. Also enclosed are 3 proofs of figures not retained, one of which is a loose print on Japanese paper, and 4 versions of the illustrated subscription prospectus. "A highly-rated and deservedly sought-after book" (Carteret). Spine unstained and very slightly rubbed, splits at the upper jaws; slipcase a little rubbed. Some light fading of the engravings.
