LOEHR,A SELF-WINDING SILVER SHAPE CASE POCKET WATCH, CIRCA 1880 On 12 April 1878, August von Loehr of Vienna applied for a patent for a self-winding watch. On 13 July 1878, he applied for a patent in the United States, which was granted on 7 January 1879 (No. 211280). Prior to Loehr's invention, automatic watches required a complex disengagement system when fully wound. Loehr solved this problem in a very simple way by employing an elastic ratchet hook.
