Lombardy, attributed to Giovanni Angelo del Maino (active in Pavia from 1496 to 1536), circa 1530. Large carved, polychromed and gilded wooden panel depicting Saint Leonard delivering a captive. The patron saint of prisoners, dressed as a monk, places his hand on the head of a man kneeling in front of him, whose arm is held by his jailer. Six other figures complete the scene in various attitudes, with hills in the background overlooked by a fortified town Height: 88.5 cm - Width: 85 cm. Old label of the Galerie Moderne 1063. Plinth (Minor accidents and missing parts). This impressive panel clearly shows the style of sculpture of the Lombard Renaissance, expressing close interaction between the figures and sometimes exacerbating expressions of pain, as in this case on the prisoner's face. The richness of the gold backgrounds and the care given to the ornamentation of the clothes, enhanced by rinceaux traced a sgraffito, like the architecture crowning the composition on the left, is typical of this Northern Italian school of which Giovanni Angelo del Maino was one of the most brilliant representatives.
