MALLIGAI ARUMBU MALAI" LONG JASMINE NECKLACE
This atypically long necklace is made up of spindle-shaped elements representing jasmine buds in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold, highlighted with small rubies, mainly synthetic, and held by engraved plant elements on a flat braided chain. Probably from the Kerala region, South India. Early 20th century. Purchased in Rajastan in 1989. Non-functional clasp (but its importance is purely decorative due to the large size of the necklace).
Length: 72 cm.
Gross weight: 147.1 g.
This necklace was worn by brides during traditional weddings in Tamil Nadu, a region at the southern tip of India. The jasmine bud is considered to be the flower of love. The necklace is highlighted with a line of rubies. It is the central stone of the magical Nava Ratna amulets, associated with the nava grahas, gods of the stars. More specifically, the ruby is linked to Surya, head of the nava grahas, the eye of the universal being who brings all cosmic forces. This shows just how important the presence of red corundum was, both physically and symbolically. A necklace like this offered every sign of protection to the new couple. A similar piece, 69.9 cm long, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, coll. nr. 1991.32.2.
