LONGUS. [Daphnis and Chloe]. Ποιμενικων των κατα Δαφνιν και Χλοην... Parma, ex regio typographeio [G. B. Bodoni], 1786. In-4, long-grained green morocco, double gilt fillet, spine decorated with gilt fleurons and roulettes on a riddled background, inner lace, gilt edges (Period binding). A sumptuous and rare Greek printing by Bodoni. According to Brooks, 170 copies were printed, including 10 on double-sized ducal paper and 10 on Annonay paper.
Longus's pastoral, printed in extremely elegant Greek script, is preceded by a notice from the typographer to the reader and a long note in Latin on the erotic books of antiquity, written by the eminent Turin scholar Paolo Maria Paciaudi. The title is decorated with a medal bearing the effigy of the muse Polymnia and the dedication to Don José Nicolás de Azara with a vignette engraved by Cagnoni after Lucatelli.
A superb copy in a luxurious, fresh green morocco binding, decorated in the Bozerian style.
Small dark stain on first board, some negligible foxing.
